Police Department The Waterville Police Department consists of fulltime professional law enforcement officers, command officers, detectives and patrol officers. All officers are graduates of The Ohio Basic Peace Officers Training Program with most possessing a college degree. All of the command staff are graduates of the Police Executive Leadership College sponsored by the Law Enforcement Foundation / Ohio Association of Chiefs Of Police. All officers continually receive in-service training from The Ohio State Highway Patrol Academy, The Ohio Peace Officers Training Academy, and other Federal / State agencies, making them one of the highest trained police departments in Northwest Ohio. Mission Statement The mission of the Waterville Police Department is to protect the rights of all persons within its jurisdiction to be free from criminal attack, to be secure in their possessions, and to live in peace, consistent with the value of a free society. It is the primary departmental objective to approach, as closely as possible, the ideal of a community free from crime and disorder. Patrol is the primary organizational function for the attainment of the departmental mission and its primary objective. Staffing Staffing level of the police department provides coverage 24-hours-per-day 365 days a year. Calls for service are answered with little or no delay in most instances. Residents may place calls for service by using the Lucas County "911" or 419-878-6666. A mutual aid agreement exists with other area law enforcement agencies. Philosophy & Programs The Police Department has adopted the philosophy of "Community Policing" and takes a proactive response to the community needs. Bicycle patrol officers are utilized weather permitting. The police department has other safety/service programs available to meet a growing community’s needs. Residents, while on vacation, may have extra checks on their homes. The department sponsors a "Safety City" program for children entering Kindergarten. School age children programs include bicycle/helmet safety, Halloween safety and Stranger Danger talks.
Traffic Enforcement The police department has an aggressive, highly visible road patrol that utilizes moving/stationary radar and laser speed detection units. Enforcement of traffic laws is a normal patrol effort on residential streets and major highways. US 24 traffic is a special concern to Waterville residents. The police department, with support of Village Officials, has implemented a "Selective Traffic Enforcement Program" (STEP). US 24 receives extra patrol and traffic enforcement. This is accomplished without pulling officers off regular patrols within the village, maintaining patrol and response for residents. Waterville Police Department
